A simple ice cream using just one ingredient (or a couple)? Banana ice cream coming right up. With summer holidays just around the corner we wanted to share a deliciously easy and refreshing ice cream that can be whipped up in minutes.  Perfect for the kids these school holidays.

Here are a few flavour combos for your own inspiration:

  • Simple banana
  • Banana strawberry
  • Banana blueberry
  • Banana mixed berry
  • Banana kiwi
  • Banana mango
  • Banana mango and maple (pictured)
  • Banana and maple
  • Banana cinnamon and honey*
  • Banana strawberry peanut butter and honey*
  • Banana peanut butter and honey*
    * not suitable for babies under 12 months.

Nutrition Note: A sweet and creamy ice cream that’s filled with goodness – full of fruit, high in flavour and low in fat.  For a ice cream without any added sugar hold the honey or maple syrup.

My kids, like most probably, love ice cream. This recipe has been such a hit and has alleviated the need to buy ice cream when out. I just tell them ‘let’s have ice cream at home!’ We made banana and blueberry and banana and strawberry, all with fruit that was getting a little mushy.

Hi Catriona, that’s fab you and your kids are enjoying the ice cream so much. Even better that they are happy to ditch the sugary store bought stuff in preference for your healthy homemade version. I bet you they love to help too 🙂 Enjoy, Jx

Yummmm!! I often make this with banana, berries, cacao and dates…never added nut butter before…wow, it’s taken our “ice cream” to a new level! My 9 month ok,is sitting on the floor licking her bowl 🙂

Our son has Autism and has issue with strong flavours, colour and texture, for these reasons he wouldn’t like the pick n mix options you’ve listed. Would this recipe work with pear?

Hi Krista, pear would work well however due to the high water content of pear some banana would still be ideal to help it go creamy. Alternatively you could try blending some frozen pear with a little natural yoghurt. I hope it works for you and your little man enjoys it 🙂 Jx

This is such a great treat for my 10yr old diabetic type 1 daughter and her non D sister. She loves bananas with yogurt so this is another alternative when she is sick of the other 🙂

So excited to make this, sounds delicious! Has anyone tried making it & freezing for later? Does it keep well?

Would this work in large quantities if frozen after blending-would like to serve it at a birthday party-is it a firm enough consistency to scoop into balls?

Love this idea. Would it work without vanilla bean paste?
