  • Samantha Yep
  • Val Gent
  • Sarah Seraiocco
  • Belinda Baker

You lucky four have been contacted by email, please be sure to respond within 48 hours or we may be forced to re-draw!

We at One Handed Cooks do dabble a fair amount in the kitchen. Are you surprised? It was only a matter of time before our little babies started crawling, then walking, then running and now demanding to help with every task we attempted to do in our daily lives. One handed cooking is now a thing of the past, you see, we have these two extra hands, which grab, smash and swipe at everything in sight. Rarely helpful, but always fun, cooking in the kitchen with children is all about being safe and giving simple, pre-planned tasks to keep them occupied.

Why cooking with your kids is so beneficial:

  • Understanding of the food we eat
  • Looking at real ingredients and where food comes from
  • Gives a great start to weights and measurements
  • Fosters fine motor skills
  • Requires patience and concentration
  • Develops positive food associations
  • Tackles fussy eating issues

We have done many articles on the benefits of cooking with kids. So, we decided it was time to pull together a really unique cooking kit, a starter kit that will take your budding foodie from clanging pots and pans, to rolling some dough and mashing the potato. We are also right into developing positive food associations and helping with fussy eating, so wanted to not only include the hands-on cooking stuff, but also the benefits of play cooking with felt food, recipe cards to follow and also gardening – watching a seed grow into a small plant and the satisfaction from eating something they planted themselves.

Introducing our very special One Handed Cooks Kids Cooking Kits

These giveaway kits are packaged in a gorgeous polka dot tote or traditional kinder suitcase and include a mix of kids and adult utensils, play food, a handmade apron, recipe cards, and seeds to take your child from play-cook to home-chef in no time. We recommend all the loot in these kits, so go on and like their pages – they are products you will want to use yourself.

Each item will help your child to develop positive food associations and to understand the importance of eating natural, healthy food.

My little ones pride and joy is her vegetable garden. Squeals of delight as things start to sprout up. Hahah she has even added a fairy garden to it with the hope some fairies will visit and enjoy her vegetable garden (sweetie).
We love a home made pizza. So much fun in making the dough and waiting for it to rise. Then adding her delights from the garden (which generally end up with a few nibbles from her before making it to the pizza, I don’t complain)
Then into the oven our creation to, with discussions as to which other vegetables should be grown for more pizza parties

Old fashioned Jam Drop Biscuits just like Granny use to make.
The kids have so much fun making them as they’re so hands on – and you can’t really get them too wrong!
Stirring the mixture, rolling it into little biscuit balls, pressing your fingers in to make the holes for the jam etc. Lots of easy tasks for them to get involved in from a young age.
And they’re so yummy as well! Nom nom!

Firstly… I do acknowledge that these kits require full adult supervision and are not suitable for children under 5 years of age.

Secondly, my favourite thing to cook with the kids is cakes. They love the whole ritual of pre-heating the oven, getting out the ingredients, measuring, mixing, pouring and of course, licking those beaters! I let them be creative with the icing, adding food colouring to vanilla frosting, using coconut, hundreds and thousands or whatever seems within reason on the icing. They’ve even gone with grated carrot which actually tasted okay on icing!

Cooking with my boys is one of my favourite pastimes and I look forward to cooking up a storm with them these school holidays.

My favourite thing to make with my children’ is my great grandmother’s gnocchi. When I was little she used to make it with me and now I get to make it with them. Being a typical Italian grandmother, she never used measurements, just a handful of this and a handful of that (apparently a ‘handful’ is a measurement of weight in Italy, lol). And that is just how I teach my kids to make this recipe – to go by look and feel. Its a lovely thing that food can connect generations. Although my children never got to meet my great grandmother, I am able to pass on a little bit of her to them and we talk about her when we make this recipe. And hopefully one day my children will be able to teach this recipe to their kids. 🙂
